My Journal #213 - Texting

Let’s return to my old habit of sending out my Friday SHOUT OUTS.

Martel – Thanks for connecting again. I missed out late night chats.

Banana Rama – I read your advice about this weekend. Thanks and I will try your plan.

HMPOA – Wassup?!?!?

Moonlight (formerly Sunshine) – Welcome home. I’m sure all the males in Houston are thrilled to have you back.

Ok, back to today’s topic. Two years ago I was a TEXTING virgin. I actually tried it about a year prior to that and absolutely hated it. But a few years ago I met someone with which I wanted to keep in touch, so "TAA DAA”!

For those newbies to my page let me share my thoughts on communication. I am a big believer in face to face conversation. I like to read a person while we communicate. And I am the sort of a guy that if I can get close to you, I will learn you. And when I learn you I will charm you. And when I charm you I can get what I want. So without a doubt if I have my “druthers” I’d rather speak face to face with someone.

My second option would be a telephone. I have one that rings when someone calls and I can call someone; and that is it. In my opinion that is all a phone should do.

[Sorry, I digressed]

With a phone I can still get that immediate response, and modify my words as I notice confusion or distress. I can’t read someone over the phone, so I lose the ability to see signs of deceit or confusion. But I can get a much quicker response. And if someone lets me go to voice mail, my conversation is over. You can call back, but you won’t get me.

Next I would choose mail or emails. I can put all my thoughts down, proof them, re-read them, adjust them, and then send them. What I lose is the control over the reply. And I hate to lose control. And if you don’t reply, well it’s like sending me to voice mail. I’m finished with that conversation.

Next would be smoke signals. [That’s a joke]

Ok, my LAST resort is to send a text message. What a waste of technology in my opinion. But I have some friends that demand text messages, and for some un-godly reason I caved in and tried it. So now I’m no longer a TEXTING virgin. But I would say I am still a novice as I choose not to improve my skills.

But in my short stint experiencing the wonder of a text message, I have come up with a few lessons I’ve learned. So here goes a novice view of texting.

People that text have completely forgotten how to spell.

Abbreviations suck.

If you don’t reply to my text message in 5 minutes, then don’t reply at all. If you reply much later I get pissed.

Never include me on a group text. I realize I may have no idea if I were, bit if I ever find out I will delete you from my phone.

Types of text messages:
* Normal Text – An attempt to stay in touch or just let someone know you are alive.
* Drunk Text – An attempt to get laid by simply begging for it. (FYI, it doesn’t work on females)
* Bored Text – An attempt to get through the next 15 minutes by dragging someone else into your boredom.
* Question text – A valid use of a text message. An attempt to collect information.
* Stalker text – An attempt to get someone you know, that doesn’t know you exist, to speak to you.
* Fishing Text – A text sent to all your friends at once to see who will reply and who won’t.
* Attack text – An attempt to get your feelings known while keeping the ability to hide.

I’m sure that there are more, but for the time being this will suffice. Have a great weekend and remember I need some time to myself this weekend to sort shit out.

My Journal #212 - Challenges

As most of you know that read along, I am experiencing some challenges. About a year and a half ago I decided to visit a doctor. The problems I was having were inability to sleep, severe and quick mood swings, occasional inability for rational thought, and memory loss. I believed all these symptoms were based on events from my past. I was told that they may contribute to the problem, but another source was identified.

However, it was concluded that I had suffered too many head injuries. During my chat with the doctor, I counted about 9 concussions I knew of including the one last year during my “Fight Club” phase. That was when I was told that by last Christmas I could have very limited short term memory.

[BTW, thanks to Martel for caring enough to make me stop doing that.]

I found a way to combat the memory problem. But the two I struggle with today are the mood swings and the lack of rational thought. This is why a few of you get emails from me asking if my view and conclusions about certain events are logical or not. It’s like I doubt my own ability to decide what something means and how to react.

The typical me used to see an action or hear someone say something and a process begins. My mind immediately begins running through all the possible meanings of the action or words. At the same time my mental rolodex about this person starts flipping through all the things I know about the person. I recall all the likes, dislikes, history, emotional stability, everything. Then it’s like the two thought process link and come up with one or two highly probably meanings of what was just said or done.

As soon as that process completes, my mind instantly starts running through a myriad of possible reactions and then follows those reaction through the person’s reaction to my actions. This happens quickly and in a blink I have the perfect reaction to the event. And I have never had the need to second guess how I react.

[I know, I am a freak. But it really happens]

For about a year now the same process begins. But it’s like there is a gear missing or something and the data all becomes disorganized in my brain. Immediately, I begin to feel my mood change, usually to frustration or anger. The next step is I fall into my “self-preservation” mode. Since I spent most of my life not trusting people, and not being able to trust people, I fall back on the worst possible scenario for me of what was just said or done. Then I react in my usual direct and abrasive manner.

And now, I always look back and begin second guessing myself. This is why I have been sending those emails. I don’t trust myself now, in additional to anyone else.

Wednesday night this happened. I was stumbling and bumbling my way through a scenario and ended up angry, frustrated and disappointed. I hate being like this. I much prefer being the intelligent yet smart ass jerk I usually am.

I didn’t communicate Wednesday night’s events with anyone. I’m so ashamed and frustrated that it is humiliating to speak of it. So on my own I dumped my PLAN A for this weekend and I am going to move to my PLAN B. Plan B is simple, un-attached, and beneficial.

So have a good weekend my friends. I gotta take care of me for a few days.

My Journal #210 - The Dating Dilemma

I’ve discussed many times before the financial inequities between being a male and being a female. I won’t go into all the details I previously discussed, but suffice it to say it’s expensive being a guy that dates.

And now I have a personal dilemma to share with you as an example.

I haven’t had an official vacation in five years. By official vacation I mean a vacation where you go to some interesting or exotic place and get away from everything in your real life. So I am saving up for a cruise. I’ve been on about 15 cruises before and my preference is a 7 day or a 10 day cruise. But because I have so much to pay for today, my savings opportunities are limited. So I am considering a 4 day cruise.

And of course I want to take a date.

Based on my budget, I can afford one by September . . . IF I don’t spend crazy money on dating prior to this time. Normally when I go on a date I have planned financially for the events I have offered for the date, and I have set aside additional cash in case the date goes a different direction. Guys have to do this because girls get really upset when they decide they want to do something on a date and you tell them you can’t afford it.

But even though I have money, I do have only so much money.

And it is difficult to try to impress a girl while you’re taking them to a reasonable restaurant or a simple bar or even a movie. Most of the girls I’ve dated want to go to high class and trendy clubs, or high end restaurants.

So my budget shows me that I can go out every other weekend as long as I spend less than $100 per date. For the record, the last 5 dates I’ve had have averaged over $200, so I am looking to have to cut back. I assume that if I am hoping to take a nice lady on my cruise vacation, I will have to date her enough that we are comfortable together. And no, I will not be booking two rooms on the cruise.

So you tell me, how do I pull this off?

If I cut back on the number of dates and the cash spent per date, then I reduce the chances that I will be associated with someone that could feel comfortable taking a cruise with me. If I don’t make those changes, then I will probably find someone; but I won’t have saved up the cash for the vacation.

Ugh!

This weekend is my first challenge. There is a lady I like, who is also someone I think I would enjoy vacationing with in the future. She has expensive taste, and she is attractive enough to have options. I have an opportunity to go to a very interesting movie theater production this weekend and I would like to take her. But the tickets will be $150 and the drinks will probably tap me for another $75. So that date would be upwards of $250, and would ruin my budget.

Another option I am pondering is to invite her to my place for a day at the pool, with a nice romantic dinner, and then an evening of champagne in the hot tub. This date, since I am doing the work of cooking, cleaning, etc, will put me out about $75. That would fit into my budget. And even thought this type of a date, regardless of money, is more to my liking; I’m just not sure it’s something that she would like as much as actually going out somewhere.
And one date allows me to be with someone I like while allowing me to stay on track for possibly taking a vacation with this woman in September.

So, speaking to all the females out there, this is the challenges guys face every weekend. Not all of us are millionaires, but we are good, solid, and stable guys. And each weekend we have to try to balance our money, romance, fun and sex in a similar fashion.

All you have to do is put on a dress and you can usually get everything you want for free!

I am asking for advice. Feel free to chime in on what course I should follow this weekend. But try to do it quickly.

My Journal #209 - A little about Sports

Today I’ve got three interesting sports stories for you.

The first has to do with a girls High School track meet. It was in Ohio I believe. The rules for this state pertaining to High School Track claim that any runner that assists any other runner in any means is automatically disqualified. This is a common rule in sports, and is also a rule here in Texas.

So this is what happened. There was a long distance race. Two girls were clearly in the lead and battling back and forth for first place. In a blink, the girl that was currently in the lead fell. She had a serious leg injury. The other competitor passed her by, but saw her fall and heard her moans. So the competitor stopped racing, went back to her fallen competitor, helped her to her feet, and assisted her in limping to the finish line.

During the limp to the finish line, several other competitors passed them by. When the two competitors reached the finish line, the girl that didn’t fall made sure that the fallen competitor crossed the finish line first. Her comment later was that the other girl had been in the lead when she fell so she deserved to finish ahead of her.

The fallen competitor was awarded 14th place. The girl that went back to help was officially disqualified for assisting her fallen competitor. But the competition committee quickly met and decided that this was a viable example for over-riding the rule; and the Good Samaritan was awarded 15th place.

Rules are important, and I am very black and white when it comes to rules. Yet I agree completely with this exception. There are definitely times in life where instances indicate that rules should be overlooked.

Yes, that was me saying that.

The second has to do with a 10 year old basketball league. It was one of those modern leagues where a few years prior it was decided that no scores would be kept, no wins and losses would be recorded, and instead of having a championship the teams would play a year end “round robin” tournament with all participants receiving awards.

The tournament ended and the “officials” gathered at a table on the south side of the gym where a table had been set up with trophies for every participant. Yet the kids walked together to the north side of the gym, without coaches or parents. Apparently the kids had gotten together prior to the tournament, had other kids keep scores for each game played, and they all agreed that the team that scored the most points would be the champion.

They had even kicked in fifty cents each to buy trophies for the winning team.

People, winning and losing is part of life. Kids need to be initiated in the thrills of winning and taught how to deal with losing. I mean how can the kids ever have an incentive to improve themselves if they get the same reward for losing as they do for winning?

Hooray for the 10 year old kids. Oh, and they left the participation trophies behind when they left!

The third has to do with the NFL. The Texans picked up a receiver after the draft was over. He was a decent college receiver but had experienced some mental anguish in college which kept any other team from taking a chance on him. But the Texans took a chance. He practiced with the team for 5 days, impressing both the press and the coaches.

He was on track to make the team. And just so you know, the least a player can make in the NFL for a season is about $200,000. On day 6 this knuckle-head walked into the coach’s office and quit. He gave no reason other than he wasn’t interested in playing football anymore.

I have two problems with this choice. First, what the heck was he thinking? He just walked away from $200,000. He didn’t even finish college. Where the heck is he going to go and work where they will pay him even half that amount with no college degree and a history of mental goofiness?

Second, there are a whole lot of young men that busted their ass for years trying to make the NFL. I was one of those guys. I got bigger, stronger, faster and smarter every day. I learned the mental part of the game as well. I worked out every day regardless of anything. I never stopped until I was finally told that I was injured to the point I could never play again.
So it’s a big slap in the face to all the guys that tried and didn’t make it for whatever reason when a knuckle-head does make it and then pisses it away for no reason.

OK, nor more sports for a while . . . . maybe!?!?!

My Journal #208 - Odds & Ends

Another weekend comes to an end. SHAZAMM! So I’ve got a few quick stories.

Friday at work the “kids” as I call them (that’s the new young ladies in the office) were discussing bra sizes. After one of them mentioned that she had 38 DD boobs, I stood up and reminded them that I was right here and boob size was not proper office talk. They blushed and quickly began whispering (I guess just ending the conversation was beyond them).

As their conversation came to an end, the 38 DD walked past my desk. I had my back to her when I felt her hands on my shoulders. Before I could spin around to find out wtf was going on, she leaned down and whispered in my ear, “Been trying to get you to notice me, I bet you will notice me from now on”

Then she slipped a piece of paper in my pocket (my shirt pocket you pervs). I didn’t look at it until I left the office. It was her number with a smiley face for each “0". I guess I still got it!

NO I DIDN’T CALL . . . . YET.

My buddy Tim and I went out cruising Friday night. As we got drunker, and maybe a bit more high, our conversation became a lot more mental. We discussed death. Tim was in Viet Nam, and he became familiar with death as I did. Although I wasn’t in Viet Nam, I experienced my fair share of death in other parts of the world. His big fear was dying with stuff still to do, so he was going to live every day doing everything he wanted to do.

As for me, my fear is dying alone. I’ve been in situations where I wondered if I would make it out or not before. But the one time I knew I would die I was all alone, and no one knew where I was. It was my biggest fear coming true.

[Again, thanks to my SUNSHINE for speaking to me back then and convincing me to fight to live. Otherwise you wouldn’t be getting my brilliant words of wisdom.]

Anyway, I have no fear of death. I just want someone to know when I go. And if you read my previous blogs, I also wonder if anyone will show up at my funeral.

Finally, I got to speak to my sweet Martel a lot this weekend. I missed our chats. So my weekend will end shortly as I send Martel a “Thank you” message for taking time out of her busy weekend to cheer me up.

Thanks Martel!

Oh, Moonlight was too busy this weekend to speak to me, but I did hear from Banana Rama and HMPOA. Thanks gals!

Have a great week ladies. You all mean the world to me.

My Journal #207 - What would Rocky do?

As you would know if you read my previous blogs, you would know I am a big Rocky fan. I like Stallone, but the character of Rocky Balboa is a character I based my life on. So I constantly ask myself, “What would Rocky do?”

I was injured my freshman year in High School. I had three spiral breaks in my right leg as well as a fracture and a broken ankle. Oh, and tore the tendons in my ankle and the ACL in my knee all on one play. Then the idiot surgeon set my leg with a 15 degree twist. Two month after the break I was told I may never run again.

I guess depression set in as sports was my life, and my goal was to be in the NFL someday. I started using drugs heavily, drinking daily, and started skipping school. Basically, I was falling out of society.

I had a friend named Terri. She was in love with me and she was my “spirit girl”. That meant that she would make me shit, boost me up, and follow me around school to see if I needed anything. She had become a good friend. And she decided that I giving up on sports was not acceptable.

One night I was sitting in my room when Terri showed up. She told me to get dressed and get up. She said she was taking me out for the evening. I was still in a cast up to my knee and wore a brace on my knee. Naturally I couldn’t drive so she was in charge. Even my old man was in on it and told me to get my “busted ass” up and go do something.

Terri took me to a drive in movie. She claimed it was because I knew I had trouble walking and she wanted me to be comfortable. Of course being the ass I was back then I was convinced that it was because she wanted sex. So I kept pawing at her, and she kept telling me to stop. She had brought me to a specific movie to motivate me, and she was determined to make me watch the movie. Finally she agreed to give me oral sex if I would quit pawing on her and watch the movie.

The movie was a Rocky double feature . . . Rocky and Rocky II.

After she was finished, I did sit back to watch the movie. Folks, it changed my life. I watched as a guy who had nothing going for him took every advantage he was given and fought for the Boxing title of the world.

For the record, I owe Terri my life.

That was a Saturday night. The next Monday morning I went to work out again. Three months later, still wearing a knee brace and a leg brace to hold my lower leg together I started my first game since my injury. I was able to play for three more years and get a college scholarship in athletics.

The day I lost my scholarship due to complications from the original injury, Terri showed up and took me for pizza and beer.

Anyway, every day of my life when I am faced with a tough decision I ask myself what would Rocky do now. And whatever I believe that character would do would help me decide what I would do. It’s not that I lost myself; it was that I had trouble focusing at times, so I needed a strong willed voice to help me out. And the character of Rocky was that voice.

I mention this because today I found out that a friend has no respect for me and I was lost. So I asked myself what Rocky would do. And the answer was walk away.

And that is what I am doing.

I am also going to try to find Terri, tonight I need her.
